Unemployment Down in All 12 Metro Areas for May
SPRINGFIELD – The unemployment rate decreased in all twelve metro areas for the year ending May 2025, according to data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (DES). Over-the-year, total nonfarm jobs increased in four metropolitan areas, leading to consecutive months with year-over-year growth: Champaign (4 consecutive months); Chicago (11 consecutive months); Elgin (9 consecutive months); Springfield (19 consecutive months).

Illinois Payroll Jobs Hold Steady, Unemployment Rate Unchanged in May
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) announced today nonfarm payrolls were nearly unchanged over-the-month, up +100 (0.0%) to 6,166,100 in May. Additionally, the April monthly change in payrolls was revised from the preliminary report, from +4,100 to -2,400.

Unemployment Down in 11 of 12 Illinois Metro Areas, 4 Hit Decades-Low for April
SPRINGFIELD – For the second month in a row, the unemployment rate decreased in eleven metro areas and increased in one over-the-year for the year end April 2025, according to data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (DES). The St. Louis (IL Section) metro area reached a record low unemployment rate for April at 2.9% while the Bloomington (2.8%), Elgin (3.5%), and Davenport- Moline-Rock Island (IL Section) metro areas reached decades low for April.
