Labor Demand Reflects Improving Economy; More to be Done

CHICAGO – Chicagoland employers published 165,500 help wanted internet ads in August, an increase of 9,400 over July, the Illinois Department of Employment Security said today, citing the independent Conference Board. The monthly increase was greater than any metro area in the country. The data is seasonally adjusted.

Statewide, employers sought 214,000 new hires, an increase of 12,500 over July. The data point indicates employers believe that they need more workers to meet consumer demand for products and services.

“Private employers creating jobs to meet demand is an encouraging indicator that our economy is moving forward,” IDES Director Jay Rowell said. “Our neighbors looking for work should use Resume Builder to find opportunities that match their skills and to clearly state why their experiences will help the company succeed.”

Locally, help wanted advertisement leaders are Bloomington/Peoria (10,300), Decatur/Springfield (7,300) and Rockford Stateline (6,900). Champaign/Danville recorded 5,800 internet job postings and the Quad Cities recorded 5,100. Local data is not seasonally adjusted.

The Conference Board collects the Help Wanted Online data. The Conference Board is a global, independent business membership and research association. Employers actually need more workers than the help wanted advertising indicates because some industries, such as construction, typically do not post job openings online.

Included in the data are 160,000 positions advertised on Illinoisjoblink.com. IDES operates the state’s hiring board and no-cost HR recruitment services. Job seekers can build multiple resumes to emphasize different skills and experiences. Employers can use keyword matching technology to search resumes and find the best candidate. Illinoisjoblink.com is free, including an evaluation of potential tax incentives for hiring certain individuals, such as Veterans, the formerly incarcerated and those using certain forms of public assistance.

Illinoisjoblink.com also can help build a resume. Step-by-step, Resume Builder creates a resume designed to pass through computer filters employers use to sort job applicants. Resume Builder also will match the resume with help wanted ads. Resume Builder is suitable for all skill levels, including college graduates.

Individuals who apply for unemployment insurance automatically are registered in Illinoisjoblink.com. Once registered, workers can select My Homepage to access My Resume. Individuals who have not applied for benefits can create an account and follow the same steps through My Homepage and My Resume.
