Unemployment Rates Down; Job Growth Remains Slow and Uneven; Six Metro Areas Across State Lose Jobs

​9/24/15 - August was the 18th month in a row that unemployment rates fell in every metro area in the state compared to a year ago, according to preliminary data released today by the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Despite some job growth, six metro areas saw job loss.

August Jobs in Illinois Decrease -900 while Unemployment Rate Declines to 5.6; Illinois Jobs Decline Three Consecutive Months
9/17/15 - The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) announced today that Illinois’ unemployment rate in August declined to 5.6 percent and nonfarm payroll employment shed -900 jobs, based on preliminary data released by the Department and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).  The state’s job numbers dropped for a third consecutive month, keeping Illinois below the national average and further delaying Illinois’ economic recovery from the 2007-2009 recession.

Important Information for State Employees Regarding UI benefits During Budget Impasse

8/1/15 -The current state budget situation presents a unique and fluid set of circumstances.  Existing precedent does not necessarily provide a definitive answer to every unemployment insurance question related to the situation.

Please note that individuals are ineligible for unemployment benefits if they continue to work as full-time employees of the state, even if they miss a paycheck.

Individuals are potentially subject to disqualification if they stop working and claim unemployment benefits in anticipation of possibly not receiving a paycheck on time.
