Pre-Registration and Key to Hiring Success

6/16/14 - Seventy five on-the-spot job offers were made at a recent Veteran hiring event in Joliet managed by the Illinois Department of Employment Security and sponsored by Congressman Bill Foster. The success illustrates how the state’s hiring portal,, links employers with qualified workers to grow their businesses and our economy.

IDES’ modernized pre-registration and outreach efforts were key to the event’s success. IDES leveraged its help-wanted hiring website to pre-match worker resumes with employer openings. IDES then worked with employers to identify Veterans and others to interview at the June 5 event at Joliet Junior College.

“We know three things about our economy. We know that it is improving. We know that the improvement has yet to reach every doorstep. And we know there is more to be done,” IDES Director Jay Rowell said. “In suburban Joliet, that economic improvement just touched 75 more doorsteps.”

In Illinois, IDES is charged with delivering employment services to Veterans. Last year, IDES helped 12,400 Veterans find work. Also last year, the American Legion honored IDES as the nation’s best workforce agency in delivering employment services to Veterans. IDES also was the nation’s first workforce agency to sign a Statement of Support with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve.

Veterans are sought-after employees for their service training, skills and experiences, which include respecting authority, embracing responsibility and operating in a team environment. Veterans also have advanced training in fields ranging from technology and manufacturing to construction and logistics.

A state income tax credit up to $5,000 is available for each qualified Veteran who is hired. Employers also might qualify for a federal tax credit of up to $9,600 through the Work Opportunity Tax Credit.
