10/19/17 - IDES announced today that the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 5.0 percent in September and nonfarm payrolls decreased by -10,800 jobs over-the-month, based on preliminary data provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and released by IDES. August job growth was revised up to show a smaller decline (-2,600 jobs) than initially reported (-3,700 jobs).

“The Illinois economy continues to sputter.” said IDES Director Jeff Mays. “Moving one step forward and one step backward, as we have done this past number of months, does little to build the positive jobs momentum that most other states have built during this recovery.”

9/21/17 - Unemployment rates decreased over-the-year in August in all of Illinois’s metropolitan areas and all but one county, according to preliminary data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES). Data also show nonfarm jobs increased in twelve of the metropolitan areas and decreased in two.

“More areas showed job gains in August, but the pace of growth is not where we would like it to be,” said IDES Director Jeff Mays. “While it is encouraging that unemployment rates declined from last year, most areas in Illinois are still higher than the national average.”

July job growth was revised down to show an increase of +600 jobs rather than the preliminary estimate of +2,100 jobs.

“The Illinois economy is stuck in neutral with hardly any growth over the past several months,” said IDES Director Jeff Mays. “As a result, this has caused the state to experience a rising unemployment rate over the past three months.”

Data also show nonfarm jobs increased in nine of the metropolitan areas, decreased in four and were unchanged in one.

“The rate of job growth has lessened in most metros that showed gains,” said IDES Director Jeff Mays. “While the gains in the Chicago area over the past year are promising, the drop in the unemployment rate is mostly due to the decline in the labor force.”

“I’m excited because two large State agencies, IDOR and IDES, are working together on this very critical project,” said IDES Director Jeff Mays. “We’ll be able to serve employers better and more efficiently because employers will have modern tools at their fingertips with a safer and faster way to conduct business with IDES.”

“We gained jobs but at about half the rate than the rest of the country,” said IDES Director Jeff Mays. “Although the unemployment rates are lower compared to last year, the labor force continues to shrink in most metro areas across the state.”

May job growth was revised up sharply to show an increase of +11,300 jobs rather than the preliminary estimate of +2,400 jobs.

“The unemployment rate increase and a decline in construction payroll are troublesome, but the trend of declining labor force is something we cannot ignore,” said IDES Director Jeff Mays. “This was the fourth consecutive over-the-month decline in labor force, which is now at its lowest level since March 2006.”

“Illinois did not participate in the nation’s job growth in April,” said IDES Director Jeff Mays. “Furthermore, the decline in the unemployment rate was largely due to a drop in the labor force, not more people working.”

4/20/17 - IDES announced today that the unemployment rate declined -0.5 percentage points to 4.9 percent in March and nonfarm payrolls decreased by -8,900 jobs over-the-month, based on preliminary data proved by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and released by IDES.

February job growth was revised down to show an increase of +14,800 jobs rather than the preliminary estimate of +25,600 jobs. March’s monthly payroll gain kept over-the-year job growth well below the national average. The March drop coupled with February’s downward revised gain means that Illinois remains -19,600 jobs short of reaching its prior peak employment reached in September 2000.

“Illinois payrolls weakened in March, just like they did for the nation,” said IDES Director Jeff Mays. “The usual pattern is that Illinois weakens more than the nation but grows less than the national average when both are on the upswing. This persistent lag in job growth explains why it took 10 years to push the unemployment rate below 5 percent.”

Dear Illinois Job Seeker:

On March 22, 2017, the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) received confirmation that one of its vendors, America’s Job Link Alliance (AJLA), experienced a data breach. AJLA owns America’s JobLink (AJL), which is a multi-state web-based system that links job seekers with employers for 10 states, including Illinois. Illinois uses the AJL system as the platform for its Illinois JobLink website, which serves Illinois job seekers and employers. America’s Job Link Alliance - Technical Support (AJLA-TS) maintains the AJL system software.

CHICAGO–Illinois’s unemployment rate held at 5.7 percent in January and nonfarm payrolls increased by +1,700 jobs over-the-month, based on preliminary data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and distributed today by IDES. December job growth was revised up to show an increase of +2,000 jobs rather than the preliminary estimate of -16,700 jobs. The modest monthly gain in January payrolls kept job growth well below the national average, with Illinois -31,900 jobs short of its peak employment level reached in September 2000.

"BLS revised up the jobs figures for both 2015 and 2016, as we expected due to the additional information based on our wage and employment filings," said IDES Director Jeff Mays. "Clearly, we’re disappointed that job growth hasn’t been more robust as we are still far behind the peak employment level of nearly 17 years ago."

CHICAGO (12/22/16) – This month, 13 of Illinois’ metropolitan (metro) areas experienced declines in their over-the-year unemployment rates and one was unchanged. Eight of the metro areas had increases in nonfarm jobs and six reported declines, according to preliminary data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and IDES.

“Job growth in Illinois’ metro areas still lag the rest of the nation,” said IDES Director Jeff Mays. “The metro areas outside of Chicago have experienced more job growth recently than the Chicago metro area, which is a bit of a change from earlier in the year.”

Bipartisan legislation will extend unemployment benefits to approximately 2,000 laid off workers

SPRINGFIELD (12/19/16) - Governor Bruce Rauner today signed Senate Bill 1941, legislation to extend unemployment insurance benefits for up to an additional 26 weeks to approximately 2,000 workers laid off from the Granite City Steel Mill in 2015.

"This legislation will help the hard working families of the Metro East who lost their jobs through no fault of their own," said Governor Rauner. "While we are encouraged by the recent news that more than 200 jobs will return to the Granite City facility, we hope that by extending unemployment benefits we are able to help the other laid off workers bridge the gap until they are gainfully employed again. Our administration will continue to push to help the steel industry and other manufacturers create jobs through common sense reforms to grow jobs, lower property taxes, improve schools and enact term limits."

9/15/16 - IDES announced today that the unemployment rate in August decreased -0.3 percentage points to 5.5 percent and nonfarm payrolls decreased, based on preliminary data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and IDES. Job growth is still below the national average, with Illinois -46,400 jobs short of its peak employment level reached in September 2000.

“In this 30-day snapshot, manufacturing losses were heavy, which contributed to more than half of the month’s decrease in nonfarm payroll jobs,” said IDES Director Jeff Mays.

Illinois’ average job growth since employment recovery began in January 2010 remains significantly below the national average, and employment will not recover from the 2007-2009 recession until May 2016, according to IDES labor market analysts. The nation is currently 3.5 percent above its prior peak level of employment.

“When you compare job growth to most other states across nation, Illinois has persistently lagged the national growth rate throughout the recovery period,” said Jeff Mays, Director, IDES.  “Even with the upward revision to the 2015 jobs figures, we went from no growth to very low growth.  At the same time, the nation grew twice as fast.”

8/27/15 - The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) will issue $16 million in credits, including associated interest charges, to nearly 13,000 Illinois employers who experienced difficulties in transitioning to new wage reporting requirements under the 2012 Medicaid reform law and Department rulemaking.  The Department credited $1.5 million on Aug. 14 to approximately 4,000 impacted employers and $14.5 million will be credited to the remaining number of employers by the end of the 4th quarter.  Refunds would be issued only if the credits cannot be applied to other liabilities by Jan. 31, 2016, under a rule agreed upon by the business and labor communities.

8/27/15 - July was the seventeenth month in a row that unemployment rates fell in every metro area in the state compared to a year ago, according to preliminary data released today by the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Rates also fell in all of Illinois’s 102 counties for the fifteenth time in the last sixteen months. Not seasonally adjusted data compares July 2015 with July 2014.

“The year-over-year statewide unemployment rate has declined from 7.3 percent to 5.9 percent and continues to fall in all metro areas,” IDES Director Jeff Mays said. “However, we are still concerned that the long-term unemployed are still having difficulty finding jobs while there were 205,700 on-line job postings by Illinois employers in July.”

8/20/15 – IDES announced today that Illinois’ unemployment rate in July declined to 5.8 percent and nonfarm payroll employment added +1,900 jobs, based on preliminary data released by the Department and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The state’s job growth numbers, however, continue to trail those of all other states, and further delay Illinois’ economic recovery from the 2007-2009 recession.

“Since the beginning of this year, Illinois has gained only a quarter of the job growth seen by the rest of the country. Had we grown at the same pace, Illinois would have added 40,000 more jobs by now,” said IDES Director Jeff Mays. “With the added problem of a widening job growth gap between Illinois and the rest of the nation, we won’t achieve pre-recession job levels until September 2016, nearly two and a half years after the entire nation regained its jobs.”

Please note that individuals are ineligible for unemployment benefits if they continue to work as full-time employees of the state, even if they miss a paycheck.

Individuals are potentially subject to disqualification if they stop working and claim unemployment benefits in anticipation of possibly not receiving a paycheck on time.
